The striking images coming out of Afghanistan have shocked the world and hopefully our consciences. Our government has willingly abandoned its commitment to the Afghan people, and has done so evidently out of political expediency. As I continue to hear the threadbare platitude of “nation building here at home," I am reminded of this poem by Philip Larkin.
